Freespeech has promised lots of new features to enhance the user friendliness such as the own mail message recording service amongst other things.

I believe they were promised by the middle of MARCH however there is still no change in the service.

I would be greatful if we as customers were kept posted on the progress. And are given some info on when this is likely to be completed

This is also very crucial for me as i am running this as my business line. I need to make a custom message recording and perhaps choose how many rings before it goes to the voicemail.

Also there are still telephone premium rate numbers which i am unable to call. For example insurance brokers etc.

I am a great believer in a fully customisable system.

Thank you for comments.

> Why is VAT charged at 21%. I thought customers were charged 17.5%
There is an EU VAT directive especially for Telecommunications services, basically it states that VAT must be charged at the VAT rate of the country where the business is registered, Freespeech is currently run by Red Squared which is a registered in Ireland. We have switching facilities in London Docklands & Dublin. However there are likely to be some changes on this in the near future.

>Why is 0800 numbers charged at 4p per minute or so as another provider charges nothing for a free call
Call route pricing is based on business decisions and cost of routing to specific destination - currently there is an overhead in the price for routing to 0800 this is reflected in the price but may change in the future. All call prices are subject to a quarterly review

> I am also very much looking forward to being able to change my voicemail greeting. Will there be the option to adjust the amount of rings before the message kicks in. This would be great!

Yes - There are lot's of new features, planned for this quarter or early next quarter depending on development schedules and other projects. There a whole new portal coming with a nice missed call manager.

Build quality tends to be a bit 'plasticy' and not designed for heavy usage and the lifetime will be shorter BUT generally speaking they work well and provide reasonable speech quality (There are many other more pricey phones which do not have the same set of features or speech quality but will probably last longer).

Many of the higher priced phones are designed for enterprise using the same brand PBX on the same LAN so they don't put as much effort into issues with NAT and firewall traversal.

Choice of phone is often personal and depends on your requirements, the better known brands are

[General] Why VoIP so popular?

VoIP has become popular largely because of the cost advantages to consumers over traditional telephone networks.
It is simply a way of utilizing the Internet (or even in some cases intranets) for telephone conversations. The primary motivations for doing so are cost (Roaming) and convenience as it is significantly less expensive than typical telephone long distance packages, plus one high speed Internet connection can serve for multiple phone lines.
A good VoIP solution allows you to place a free call over the internet to another voip user. But you can reduce your call costs by using a voip line for your normal calls which are at discounted rates in many provider's plans. All that is needed is a voip compatible hardware or software phone for both people.
Everybody can save money and reduce phone bills up to 65% with such service.
Unlike Skype where you only get pay-as-you-go options, some low rate voip companies like Coms, offer calling plans for unlimited voip phone calls. that’s an opportunity to take!

To change your telephony system, it exists loads of compatible equipments nowadays: It can be a voip adapter just plugged to the normal telephone, OR a voip software used on the pc, OR a wireless voip phone also called dect voip phone and replacing your current landline telephone.

[General] Different VoIP Customer Profils

VoIP (or Internet telephony which is almost the same thing) is any one of several technologies that allow you to make phone calls over the Internet instead of over the telephone network.

Typically any VoIP solution – Business VoIP on up – offers slightly lower operating costs (contrary to advertising claims the cost savings are small) but offers a big step forward in available features and functions. For example, it is now perfectly feasible and cost effective for a 20 person small business to run a call center of its own and to have one system manage main and branch offices and even remote and telecommuting workers.

When looking for VoIP service and when finding a good fit for a service provider is to do a little due diligence.
Residential VoIP. You should get a flat rate with free long distance. It should include all necessary equipment. It should cost less than your current service. It should include voicemail with access from anywhere. It should include advanced features like caller ID, callback, etc. It should NOT interfere with your other broadband-based services (Internet access, etc.)

Small-business VoIP. You should either get a direct dial number or an extension for everyone. Cost of operation should be lower than your current system. Setup and maintenance should be simple via a web interface or from the phones themselves. Conference calls should be straightforward. You should have full caller ID and identification on missed calls.

Medium-business VoIP. You should get a full feature system that matched what you previously would expect from a multi-national large enterprise phone system (really). You should get full call menu and voicemail tree systems. You should get the ability to include remote workers and branch offices in the company phone system. It should be no more expensive than your current system.

Large enterprise VoIP. The world is your oyster – you want a system that you can integrate into your corporate network, that can be built into your business and IT applications, that can smooth the way forward for your business in all kinds of directions.

It is possible to ring from outside to Freespeech using *8119 Sip Broker code.

Is it going to be possible to call from Freespeech using Sip Broker, for example like VoipTalk uses **473 prefix?

Hello Everybody,

I am doing a survey on voip and costumer preferences and views about the service. Since i know you guys openly share about which voip is best and all that, i thought you guys should check it out. I would post the results for you all when its done so you can share with other friends. Please follow the link below and you can check it out. It should take 10 minutes and hey you would also be entered in a prize draw for an i-pod.
Enjoy! cheers

Stop the train - I've arrived!

For some reason it just seemed to take some time to put itself right but it now works!

I spent some time on Saturday night 'phoning' my wife (who was using the softphone) using the iPAQ - very sad activity for a Saturday night I know!

I think the results might be somewhat skewed simply because the test we performed is using a 2Mb link (the quickest we can get out here!) and you can effectively half that since both softphone and iPAQ are using the same equipment. Additionally both devices are using the WLAN with WEP encoding enabled.

However, even with that we were able to hold a reasonable conversation and only had trouble when the iPAQ was taken to the edge of the WLAN range. The closer to out of range I got the more silent gaps we got in conversation.

On the whole though it has solved a big problem for us. Now when I'm on the road staying in a hotel or whatever. I will be able to call home from wherever I get a wireless signal using my iPAQ. The call will be free and I won't have to lug my laptop around with me and look like a 'twonk' talking to my wife through the computer in hotel lobbies, service stations etc. At least now I can use a mobile device and look like a more normal 'twonk'.

I'll keep this up to date as I use the service in anger but for now:

- Thanks to freespeech who have been extremely helpful in solving my newbie questions

- Thanks to HP for an excellent multi-functional mobile device (it even does speech recognition - for making calls and answering emails while driving etc - sooo cool)

>A bit more investigation and I have now found out that I can make an outgoing call >from the iPAQ but cannot reciece calls using it from either the SoftPhone on the >laptop or a landline

- Unless you have a SIP ALG (Application Level Gateway) built into your router you are less likely to be able to call from your latop software phone to your iPAQ, many routers will be confusing in the public/private mapping that is required.

- Does the software phone (x-lite I presume) on your laptop ring when you dial in ?

Also describe your network configuration, it may help.
